We see the word ENRICHED on many of the foods we buy from the grocery store, especially breads, pasta and cereal. But what does it really mean and is it safe.
Enriched means that the food originally contain certain nutrients and minerals but lost them through the processing stage. The vitamins and minerals are then added back in after processing is done. This is most common in white bread where the grain is stripped.
Avoiding processed food is best and if packaging says enriched or fortified, most likely it is processed. Enriched foods are not bad for you, but the better choice is to eat whole grain foods and unprocessed foods. Eating breads and pasta is a big part of many people’s daily diet, so a better choice when shopping for these types of foods are to choose whole grains and short ingredients list.
