Essential oils are becoming more and more popular. These oils are a highly concentrated liquid from plants or leaves. They can be used for aromatherapy, alternative medicine and household cleaning and many other uses.
Most essential oils need to be diluted in order to use, since they are highly concentrated. Follow Pathways of Happiness essential oil board on Pinterest for some ideas on how you can use it and mix it.
I like grape-seed and coconut as carrier oils to dilute essential oils.
Here are a few ways to use essential oils in your day to day life.
Morning/Night face treatment
For peeling winter dry skin on your face, use coconut oil and tea tree oil. Just take a cotton ball rub a small amount of coconut oil on it then 2 drops of tea tree oil. This really helps with dry peeling skin on the face. This is also great for minor skin rashes.
Homemade Vapor Rub
This is a three ingredient easy to make vapor rub. Make this to rub to go the on chest and soles of feet when congested or have a cough. It smells great and I love that it is all natural with no scary ingredients. Plus it is super cheap compared to Vicks vapor rub.
- Refined coconut oil
- Eucalyptus essential oil
- Lavender essential oil
Directions: Start with about 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil in a small container that has a lid. Add about 4-6 drops of eucalyptus essential oil and 2-3 drops of lavender into the coconut oil and stir. Thats it, just rub on the chest and use how you would any vapor rub. I use refined coconut oil because it does not harden as much as unrefined coconut oil. Add more eucalyptus oil if you want a stronger smell. If you don’t have coconut oil try using petroleum jelly instead.
There are many different scents to use in a diffuser. My favorite is the scent of Patchouli oil, but you can use any scent or combination of scents you like. Find a glass bottle that narrows at the top . I use wood skewers that I have for making shish kabobs and just cut the points off. Pour about a 1/4 cup of a carrier oil ( grape-seed or sweet almond oil for great) in the container. I use grape-seed oil. Put in about 12 drops of patchouli and add a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, preferably 90%. Enjoy!
In a spray bottle pour equal part white vinegar and water along with about 12 drops of lavender or citrus essential oil. Shake it up and start cleaning! This cleaner works great and has no harmful chemicals.
For a more stronger or multipurpose cleaner try using 1 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup of white vinegar in a spray bottle. Add 1 tablespoon of Dawn dishwashing liquid to the mixture and your favorite essential oil. Lemon essential oil or lavender smells great with this mixture.
